The term church originated from Greek "kyriake", meaning "of the lord". The term later began to replace the Greek ekklesia and basilica within Christendom, c. AD 300, though it was used by Christians before that time. <Tigre_siberiano> ........ <Tigre_siberiano> ekklesia <Tigre_siberiano> ek-klay-see'-ah <Tigre_siberiano> From a compound of Ek and a derivative of kaleo¯ ; a calling out, that is, (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): - assembly, church. <Tigre_siberiano> ........ <Tigre_siberiano> ek, ex <Tigre_siberiano> A primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence motion or action proceeds), from, out (of place, time or cause; literally or figuratively; direct or remote): - after, among, X are, at betwixt (-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+ abundantly above), for (-th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, X hereby, + very highly, in, . . . ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, X thenceforth, through, X unto, X vehemently, with (-out). Often used in composition, with the same general import; often of completion. <Tigre_siberiano> ....... <Tigre_siberiano> kaleo¯ <Tigre_siberiano> kal-eh'-o <Tigre_siberiano> Akin to the base of G2753; to “call” (properly aloud, but used in a variety of applications, directly or otherwise): - bid, call (forth), (whose, whose sur-) name (was [called]). <Tigre_siberiano> .... <Tigre_siberiano> The church is simplely a group of believers. <Tigre_siberiano> ........... <Tigre_siberiano> II: The start of the church. <Tigre_siberiano> Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. <Tigre_siberiano> The church started in Jerusalem and then expanded out from there. <Tigre_siberiano> Jerusalem was the city where the aspotiles were when Jesus said this <Tigre_siberiano> Judaea was the country that Jerusalem was located in <Tigre_siberiano> Samaria was the country north of Judaea <Tigre_siberiano> They were to start locally and then expand out to other places. <Tigre_siberiano> Of course today a lot of Christians want to skip the local part and all and go right to the uttermost part of the earth. <Tigre_siberiano> .......... <Tigre_siberiano> III: What did the early church do? <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 2:42) And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 2:43) And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 2:44) And all that believed were together, and had all things common; <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 2:45) And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. <Tigre_siberiano> .......... <Tigre_siberiano> They continued to follow the teachings of the apostles' and to fellowship with each other and they prayed <Tigre_siberiano> ......... <Tigre_siberiano> Acts 2:44-45 These 2 verses don't mean that they sold everything that they owned and gave to the church <Tigre_siberiano> but they sold the things that they didn't need and gave the proceeds to the church <Tigre_siberiano> ....... <Tigre_siberiano> IV: Where did the church meet at? <Tigre_siberiano> ..... <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 2:46) And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, <Tigre_siberiano> ...... <Tigre_siberiano> the church meet at the Temple but they also meet in each other's homes <Tigre_siberiano> .... <Tigre_siberiano> V: what happened as the church grew? <Tigre_siberiano> ..... <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 6:1) And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 6:2) Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 6:3) Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. <Tigre_siberiano> (Acts 6:4) But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. <Tigre_siberiano> .... <Tigre_siberiano> The apostles' decided to appoint others to take care of the day to day business of the church <Tigre_siberiano> so they could focus on the ministry of the word and prayer. <Disciple> Amen <Tigre_siberiano> ....... <Tigre_siberiano> VI: Expansion of the early church <Tigre_siberiano> ...... <Tigre_siberiano> Paul went on three missionary journeys <Tigre_siberiano> .. <Tigre_siberiano> the first one is described in Acts chapters 13 to15. <Tigre_siberiano> .. <Tigre_siberiano> He traveled from Seleucia to Salamis to Paphos to Perga to Antioch to Iconium to Lystra to Derbe and <Tigre_siberiano> then back to Lystra from there to Attalia and then back to Seleucia <Tigre_siberiano> ....... <Tigre_siberiano> The second one is described in Acts chapter 15 to 17 <Tigre_siberiano> ... <Tigre_siberiano> he traveled from Jerusalem to Antioch to Tarsus to Derbe to Lystra to iconium to <Tigre_siberiano> Troas to Neapolis to Philppi to Amphipolos to Thessaloncia to Beroea to <Tigre_siberiano> Athens to Corinth to Ephesus to Rhodes and then back to Jerusalem. <Tigre_siberiano> On his third journey Paul revisited the places that he visited on his first two journeys. <Tigre_siberiano> ...... <Tigre_siberiano> Paul also wrote letters (epistles) to some of the places that he had visited <Tigre_siberiano> ...... <Tigre_siberiano> Philppi = Philppians <Tigre_siberiano> ... <Tigre_siberiano> Thessalonica = 1 and 2 Thessalonians <Tigre_siberiano> ... <Tigre_siberiano> Corinth = 1 and 2 Corinthians <Tigre_siberiano> ..... <Tigre_siberiano> Ephesus = Ephesians <Tigre_siberiano> .... <Tigre_siberiano> Derbe,Lystra, and Iconium were in an area know as Galatia <Tigre_siberiano> ... <Tigre_siberiano> galatia = galatians
