Post 05-20-08 Bible study entitled"Rules for being a Christian"

[23:06] <Qua_joHa> Tonight's Bible study is entitled"Rules for being a Christian"

[23:07] <Qua_joHa> ............

[23:07] <Qua_joHa> I: Rules that a church gives you.

[23:07] <Qua_joHa> .............

[23:07] <Qua_joHa> In a lot of churches they give you this big list of rules

[23:07] <Qua_joHa> that they expect you to follow if you're a christian

[23:08] <Qua_joHa> such as what to wear to church, what TV shows you can watch, etc.

[23:08] <Qua_joHa> It was the same way in Jesus' time.

[23:08] <Qua_joHa> ...............

[23:08] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:1) Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

[23:08] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:2) And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

[23:08] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:3) For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

[23:09] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:4) And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

[23:09] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:5) Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

[23:09] <Qua_joHa> Mark 7:6) He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

[23:09] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:7) Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

[23:09] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:8) For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

[23:10] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:9) And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

[23:10] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:10) For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

[23:10] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:11) But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

[23:10] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:12) And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

[23:10] <Qua_joHa> (Mark 7:13) Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

[23:11] <Qua_joHa> .........

[23:11] <Qua_joHa> Even in Jesus' time they had rules that had nothing to do with the Bible or God

[23:11] <Qua_joHa> ..........

[23:12] <Qua_joHa> II: Churches have all these rules that they expect you to follow yet they don't follow them

[23:12] <Qua_joHa> because most of the time there's so many that they can't remember them all.

[23:12] <Qua_joHa> In jesus's time it was the same way.

[23:12] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 23:1) Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

[23:12] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 23:2) Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

[23:13] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 23:3) All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

[23:13] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 23:4) For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

[23:13] <Qua_joHa> ...............

[23:13] <Qua_joHa> III: What rules did Jesus give :

[23:13] <Qua_joHa> ...........

[23:13] <Qua_joHa> Jesus only gave two rules for Christians to follow.

[23:14] <Qua_joHa> ............

[23:14] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 22:37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

[23:14] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 22:38) This is the first and great commandment.

[23:14] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 22:39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

[23:14] <Qua_joHa> (Matthew 22:40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

[23:14] <Qua_joHa> ................

[23:15] <Qua_joHa> If you love the Lord your God with everything you have you will follow and obey the first

[23:15] <Qua_joHa> five commandments.

[23:15] <Qua_joHa> ..........

[23:15] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:3) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

[23:15] <Qua_joHa> ..............

[23:15] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:4) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> ...............

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:7) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> ...............

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:8) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> ...............

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:12) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

[23:16] <Qua_joHa> ...................

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> If you love your neighbor as yourself you will keep the last five commandments.

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> ......................

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:13) Thou shalt not kill.

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> ...............

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:14) Thou shalt not commit adultery.

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> .................

[23:17] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:15) Thou shalt not steal.

[23:18] <Qua_joHa> .............

[23:18] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:16) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

[23:18] <Qua_joHa> ..................

[23:18] <Qua_joHa> (Exodus 20:17) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

[23:18] <Qua_joHa> ........................

[23:19] <Qua_joHa> Jesus said that on these two commandments hang all the Law and the prophets.

[23:19] <Qua_joHa> in that if you keep these two you will follow what the law and the prophets told you.
