Default Mark 14:22-31

@seekHm1st> Okay folks, it's time to get rolling.......
@seekHm1st> Welcome everyone, to the weekly server meeting and
@seekHm1st> Bible study
@seekHm1st> I would like to give you a couple of reminders before we open in prayer
@seekHm1st> So, tonight's server meeting will be brief
@seekHm1st> As many of you may have heard
@seekHm1st> there are changes in the wind here at CCNET
@seekHm1st> Those of you who have asked to be on the mailing list should have received an email from BrianO today, updating you all
@seekHm1st> By way of mention, it would be helpful, as the email stated, if you would stop by the forums
@seekHm1st> and register with your nickname
@seekHm1st> And also, please keep the admins in prayer
@seekHm1st> as they have been putting in some longish hours to get these changes in place, and ready to go.
@seekHm1st> Also .......
@seekHm1st> I think that surely, most of you must have heard about hurricane Fay running aground in Florida
@seekHm1st> more than once
@seekHm1st> It has caused some really bad flooding
@seekHm1st> and some of the folks you chat with here on a regular basis are directly affected
@seekHm1st> So if you could keep those folks in mind, as well as everyone down there in prayer, I'm sure they would appreciate it.
@seekHm1st> As well as police and emergency personnel.
@seekHm1st> Okay, let's go ahead and open in prayer.
@seekHm1st> Would anyone like to do that?
@seekHm1st> Okay, I will go ahead
LarryBoy> :)
@seekHm1st> Father, we thank You for bringing us together tonight
@seekHm1st> And we ask You to bless this meeting and study, and that You would be with those who are not with us
@seekHm1st> Help us to see what You have for us tonight, and give us understanding, and the wisdom to keep it in our hearts.
@seekHm1st> In Jesus' name we pray
@seekHm1st> Amen
DadSonDaughter> amen
Deacon> Amen
froggie> amen
hugsfromtheMASTER> Amen
lemon> amen
LarryBoy> amen
@seekHm1st> last week, we followed the two disciples whom Jesus sent as they entered the city of Jerusalem followed a man to a large upper room where they prepared a Passover mean for Jesus and the twelve.
@seekHm1st> They had all gathered together for the meal, when Jesus had shocked them all by telling them that He would be betrayed
@seekHm1st> Not only would He be betrayed, but the betrayal would come from one seated among them
@seekHm1st> At that point, they all began to grieve and one by one ask, "Surely, not I Lord?"
@seekHm1st> Jesus had then given the betrayer a stern warning, saying flatly that it would have been better for that man, if he had never been born.
@seekHm1st> But in that last verse from last week, we also see something about Jesus that is very telling
@seekHm1st> Let me post it again, from verse 21 of Mark 14
@seekHm1st> "For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him;"
@seekHm1st> I think we covered this last week, but I would like to mention it again
@seekHm1st> Jesus is speaking here of the Old Testament writings which prophesied of His betrayal and crucifixion.
@seekHm1st> He would "go", just exactly as it was written of Him, because it was part of God's predetermined plan of salvation.
@seekHm1st> He would go, voluntarily, as a perfect and dutiful Son.
@seekHm1st> Let's pick up the study in verse 22
@seekHm1st> 22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body."
@seekHm1st> 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
@seekHm1st> 24 And He said to them, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
@seekHm1st> Jesus is taking a transformative step here.
@seekHm1st> He and His disciples are just about in the middle of the Passover meal when He departed from established tradition.
@seekHm1st> What was He doing here? Would anyone like to comment? Please raise your hand like so--o/
@seekHm1st> Have any of you seen anything like what He was doing here, in you own church?
Tink> o/
@seekHm1st> Tink?
Tink> He was turning the passover celebration into the Lords supper
@seekHm1st> Yes!
@seekHm1st> Thank you.
@seekHm1st> He was making a special memorial to the fact that God delivered mankind from sin
@seekHm1st> 25 "Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
@seekHm1st> 26 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
@seekHm1st> So, they headed slightly eastward out of the city toward the Mount of Olives, and they spoke on the way....
@seekHm1st> 27 And Jesus *said to them, "You will all fall away, because it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED.'
@seekHm1st> We can only imagine what must have been going through the minds of these men.
@seekHm1st> Earlier Jesus had said that one of this close circle of friends would betray Him.
@seekHm1st> Now, He was telling them that they would all falter, that they would all fall away.
@seekHm1st> Jesus knew they would fall away, yet He gave them confirmation that He knew.
@seekHm1st> Does anyone know how He did that? Look at verse 27 again
@seekHm1st> Anyone?
DadSonDaughter> He was His Father and Jesus and Holy spirit in One
@seekHm1st> True, but I am thinking in terms of what He gave those listening, that would confirm what He was saying to them.
DadSonDaughter> im lost then
@seekHm1st> Okay, from verse 27--- "You will all fall away, because it is written,
@seekHm1st> BECAUSE... it is written
Deacon> o/
@seekHm1st> Deacon?
Deacon> the sheep would be scattered
@seekHm1st> Right, He was quoting from something though, something written.........
@seekHm1st> Where did the quote "I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED." come from?
Deacon> the scripture
@seekHm1st> exactly
@seekHm1st> He was quoting from Zechariah, chapter 13 verse 7 to be precise
@seekHm1st> And when He said, "it is written" no doubt their ears perked up
@seekHm1st> Okay, let's move ahead
@seekHm1st> 28 "But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."
@seekHm1st> Now, after He has said that they would fall away from Him, He would meet them when they got to Galilee?
@seekHm1st> Their heads must have been swimming with emotions, and with questions.
@seekHm1st> 29 But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away, yet I will not."
@seekHm1st> 30 And Jesus *said to him, "Truly I say to you, that this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times."
@seekHm1st> 31 But Peter kept saying insistently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all were saying the same thing also.
@seekHm1st> Okay, which of the disciples does verse 31 say were insisting they would not deny Jesus?
froggie> o/
@seekHm1st> froggie?
froggie> peter
froggie> wait
@seekHm1st> Just Peter?
froggie> no all of them said it afer peter
DadSonDaughter> question?
@seekHm1st> Right :)
@seekHm1st> go ahead DadSonDaughter
DadSonDaughter> Did not the Disciples know thier scripture and whom Jesus was that he was going to Have to Die For Us to Be forgiven,,before he spoke "I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED."
DadSonDaughter> ??
@seekHm1st> Well, the disciples saw Jesus as a Messiah
@seekHm1st> They saw Him as their deliverer
DadSonDaughter> but they knew not the way it was going to transpire?
@seekHm1st> They saw Him as a King at this point
@seekHm1st> but they did not understand what His deliverance would be from
@seekHm1st> They did not understand His mission......
DadSonDaughter> kk tyvm
@seekHm1st> You're very welcome.
DadSonDaughter> explins alot
@seekHm1st> So all of these men present were saying they would not deny Him
@seekHm1st> But.....
@seekHm1st> when we see these verses, or hear them read.....
@seekHm1st> We (I) often have a tendency to think ----- just Peter
@seekHm1st> There are people I have heard over the years who kind of like to poke fun at Peter
@seekHm1st> They recall his being called, "the big fisherman" in a way that almost makes him sound like a lumbering doofus
@seekHm1st> It is easy to point out places in Scripture like the Mount Transfiguration and talk about how Peter put his foot in his mouth once again
@seekHm1st> However, I am very well-acquainted with the taste of my size fourteens.
froggie> lol
@seekHm1st> I think we need to understand that Peter was one of not only the twelve, but of Jesus' most inner circle.
@seekHm1st> He was very close to Jesus.
@seekHm1st> And Jesus had-----and this is an abundant understatement, a dizzying intellect.
@seekHm1st> Any of us, even the most highly educated person among us, would have eventually said something we shouldn't have, or at least said things at the wrong moment
@seekHm1st> Especially if we had spent three years at the feet of the most amazing rabbi who ever lived
@seekHm1st> For Peter, the idea of denying this man was out of the question
@seekHm1st> In his mind.
@seekHm1st> After all, Jesus was going to be the King of Israel after leading His countrymen to oust their Roman oppressors
@seekHm1st> And it wasn’t just Peter who thought this way. It was all of the disciples.
DadSonDaughter- any of the Discip;es coulda denied him and if im reading into this correctly,,its a ufinizim for any of us today who cna be part of Christ or Not and when that day comes,,our judgement will be judged,,ya dont half to answer just typing outloud to yur ear.
@seekHm1st> But Jesus knew Peter better than Peter knew himself.
@seekHm1st> And while Peter shared a misunderstanding of Jesus’ ministry with the rest of the disciples, Jesus knew precisely what His kingdom was all about.
DadSonDaughter> amen
@seekHm1st> Again, just as we saw in last week’s study, Jesus now gives Peter a fair warning, just as He gave a huge warning to Judas.
@seekHm1st> What they would do with what He said to them were their respective choices to make.
@seekHm1st> Peter makes a bold proclamation that he would never fall away from Jesus-- he said he would never deny Him.
@seekHm1st> Jesus corrects him, and Peter comes back even stronger
@seekHm1st> You don't need to answer, but does Peter have an opportunity here, to consider his own weakness?
@seekHm1st> Do we?
DadSonDaughter> YES
@seekHm1st> Judas, as we have discussed, is the man who would betray Jesus, his own Master.
froggie agrees
@seekHm1st> It might be an easy thing to become angry with Judas because of his actions
@seekHm1st> He professed to be loyal to Jesus
@seekHm1st> So do we.
@seekHm1st> He sat at table with Jesus.
@seekHm1st> We partake of the Lord's Supper in church.
@seekHm1st> How many times have we fallen away from our Master, in one way or another?
@seekHm1st> If we are thinking, I would never fall away from Jesus!......
@seekHm1st> Then I think it is time to take a lesson from the 'big fisherman'
@seekHm1st> If we disobey Jesus, we are denying His love for us
DadSonDaughter> amen
@seekHm1st> To distrust His word is to deny His truth
@seekHm1st> If we deny His authority in our lives we are in effect, denying His Godhood
@seekHm1st> Every day, we need to ask God to search our hearts
@seekHm1st> to make them right before Him
DadSonDaughter> Yes Lord
@seekHm1st> We will see in the coming studies that Peter’s words in fact, did not match His actions in this instance where Jesus was concerned
@seekHm1st> But... we will also see a man lovingly restored, graciously forgiven, and faithfully empowered to do the will of God.
@seekHm1st> Let’s close in prayer.
@seekHm1st> Father, we ask that You would change our hearts each day.
@seekHm1st> Making them grow to be more and more like Your own
@seekHm1st> Help us to love You more, and love others more each day
DadSonDaughter> \o/
@seekHm1st> Protect us Father, from making the kinds of terrible mistakes that our own willfulness and reluctance to obey You can bring about
@seekHm1st> Make us obedient servants Father, who listen to the one who forgave us from the Cross
@seekHm1st> It is in His name we pray
@seekHm1st> Amen
froggie> amen
Deacon> Amen
DadSonDaughter> Amen
@seekHm1st> Thank you all for coming folks
